Extra magazines

We are hoping to do a collage art activity.  If you have any old magazines around the house that you would be willing to donate, please send them in.  They will be used for art so I will not be able to return them.

Stir Crazy

We all had a lot of extra energy today.  With the cold weather and indoor recess we are unable to move as much as we need to and this makes learning much harder!  Today, we converted our classroom to a yoga studio and practiced our yoga moves.  The students really enjoyed the video as it tells a story as well.  Today the story was Star Wars!  Here is a link:

This is a great link and she has lots of different stories that all incorporate yoga movements.  I use them with Parker all the time when we can’t get outside.  Parents and teachers–may the force be with us as we deal with this weather!

I sent home scholastic today–due February 3rd.

Hard at work!

We’ve dived right in and we are working hard!  On top of the polar bear unit, we have started a Mo Willems author study.  Did you know he started drawing his first characters when he was only 3 years old?

The students are really working hard at their literacy and numeracy skills and at the end of the month, report cards will be coming out with an update on how your child is doing.  I just wanted to post an image to remind us all how hard learning to read is!enghard

The best bet is to practice, practice, reinforce, and then read some more!  Happy learning!

And the winner is…..

The students were very excited to vote today and it was a very close call!  Polar bear won but only by one vote with Orca being the 2nd choice.  The students are excited to start their research but I will need a few days to gather some resources.  Happy learning!

Today, our classes have launched our Science Inquiry Animal Research Unit (which is very exciting!)  Today, students were presented with a list of 10 Canadian animals that they are to look at (briefly) over the weekend and choose their top 3 choices.  On Monday, we will be casting our votes where they will be given a ballot for these choices.  By the end of the day, we will determine the results of the vote and that will be the animal that each class will be studying in more detail for this unit.  Please take some time over the weekend to discuss these choices with your child and help them narrow their focus for Monday.  Thanks and have a lovely weekend!

  1. Polar Bear
  2. Orca
  3. Coyote
  4. Bison
  5. Beaver
  6. Snowshoe hare
  7. Bats
  8. Owls
  9. Arctic Fox
  10. Snakes

We will be trying our best to narrow our research to species indigenous to Canada however, we recognize that certain animals mght be difficult to find ample resources on.  We will then look at the broader species and narrow our focus as possible (i.e. snowshoe hare–rabbit).

Monday…I mean Thursday Announcements!

Hello families!  I hope you all had a wonderful break.  All of the students seemed excited to be back (although a bit sleepy!) and had wonderful stories to tell me about their holidays.  We are jumping right back into Grade 1 routines so here are the weekly sight words and word family (these will carry over until next Friday):

  • Sight words: four, yes, under, am, brown
  • Weekly Word family: “ot” http://files.hubbardscupboard.org/Word_Family_10.1-_ot_sheet.pdf
